TELMA RETARDER
We have been the main importer of Telma products for Switzerland and Liechtenstein since 1967. Telma retarders are produced in Saint-Ouen L’Aumone, France. A Telma retarder brings added safety benefits in all deployment scenarios. With its electromagnetic system, it acts directly on the driveline and can decelerate the vehicle to a halt, independently of the vehicle’s service brake.
We supply Telma retarders in the 350 to 3300 N size classes.

PRODUCT RANGE
Axial series
The Axial series is installed between the transmission and rear axle and covers all weight classes. Additional equipment such as ERC, CTR, MCR control units, etc. allow optimisation of use and help to enhance operating comfort for the driver (cruise control, diagnostics, etc.).

Focal series
The Focal series has been specially developed for coaches with rear-mounted engines and short-wheelbase tractor vehicles. Focal retarders are installed directly on the gearbox or rear axle. This direct flanging requires virtually no modification to the drive shaft, helps to save weight and helps to simplify maintenance considerably.

Operating principle & benefits
How to ensure maximum braking performance
The three main causes of overheating and wear to service bakes on vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 to 6 tonnes are:
- The sustained use of brakes when on inclines
- Repeated, short braking operations in urban traffic
- High vehicle weight when laden
A temperature increase in the service brake causes:
- A loss of braking power
- Premature wear to brake linings, brake discs and brake drums
- Overheating of the service brake
The Telma retarder is an electromagnetic retarder. It ensures braking at high speeds to bring the vehicle to a complete halt. It is frictionless in operation, low maintenance and helps to preserve the service brakes.
Other benefits of the Telma Retarder
Economical – reduces operating costs
The wear-free Telma retarder handles 90% of all braking operations. This relieves pressure on the service brakes and in turn helps to extend the service life of components (brake blocks, linings and drums). Thanks to a reduction in maintenance work, vehicle downtime is also minimised.
Safe – more about safety
The Telma retarder brings added safety benefits in all deployment scenarios. The system is connected to the driveline and use electromagnetic eddy currents to counter the operating torques in the drive shaft line and decelerate the vehicle independently of the service brake. The electrical control unit enables extremely rapid response times (120 milliseconds), thus reducing them to a minimum. The Telma retarder can be connected to the foot control, thus handling up to 90% of all braking operations. This helps to preserve the service brake and maintain its ideal temperature so that, if emergency braking is required, it can act effectively.
Kind to the enviroment – emission-free operation principle
Thanks to electromagnetic operation, the Telma retarder works without friction or operating materials. Thanks to reduced wear on the brake linings, dust production is also reduced considerably. In addition, the Telma retarder is also silent in use.
Comfortable – for a pleasant journey
Thanks to the linear progressivity of its operation, the Telma retarder offers unparalleled comfort for the driver and passengers, both in passenger vehicles and camper vans/mobile homes. The retarder is operated with a hand switch mounted on the steering wheel or instrument panel. An additional combination with foot control helps to increase attention to road and traffic conditions. With an electrical control system, the Telma retarder can be seamlessly integrated into all brake control systems, including anti-lock systems, anti-slip control systems and cruise control systems.
Functional principal
Rotors are connected to the drive shaft. Between the two rotors is the stator, which is secured to the chassis.
When the electrical current flows from the stator into the coils with alternating polarity, it generates a magnetic field which closes through the rotors. This magnetic field generates eddy currents in the rotors, which counter revolutions and then decelerate the drive shaft. This effect is achieved through electromagnetic induction alone – with no contact, there is no wear.
This induced current converts the vehicle’s braking energy in the rotors through the Joule effect in the form of heat. Cooling is provided by the fan blades, which convey the heat directly into the ambient air. The retarder operates fully autonomously.
